Miriam King


Miriam King is an Artist/Choreographer/Dancer/Live Artist/Filmmaker born in London, living in Brighton, working internationally. With an art school background her professional performance career commenced in 1984. Moving from theatre through to dance, and to live art and film, her most significant training was with Anton Adasinsky & his performance company DEREVO at their former studio in Leningrad, Russia in 1990. Miriam's work is influenced by Butoh dance. She's has been creating her own unique performances since 1992, taking her to dance and live art festivals and artist-in-residences around the World. Her award winning dance film work has been shown at Lincoln Centre/ New York , Pompidou Centre/Paris, ICA/London, the Venice Biennial and at the Sydney Opera House, Australia and in every continent (excluding Antarctica ). Miriam has a continuing performance relationship with Gallery Kruh, Kostelec nad cernymi Lesy, nr Prague , Czech Republic which commenced in 1992 and an ongoing performance relationship with SoToDo Gallery , Berlin & the Congress of Visual and Performance Art.
She has researched, lectured and presented work in many countries including France , Belgium , Germany , Czech Republic , Finland , Italy , Portugal , Greece , Iceland , USA , China , South Korea , New Zealand and Australia . Early projects & choreographies have been shown at the ICA National Review of Live Art. Commissions have included Chisenhale Dance Space, London for "Maraluna's Cabinet", and the "Archetype" Arts Council commission to create her dance/live art & video installation "Specimim", which then toured to Thessaloniki, Greece, and the Compton Skyline Project, Brighton where Miriam created 16ft high rooftop choreographic projections. Miriam has been a guest lecturer and workshop leader at Dance House, Dublin and invited international choreographer at "Ex...it! Butoh Symposium", Schloss Broellin , Eastern Germany .
Artist in Residences include "The Fountain Project", as part of Arts Council "Year of the Artist". Artist in Residence at The Firkin Crane, Cork , Ireland . Artist in Residency at The Point, Eastleigh creating her performance installation "The Reading Room". Artist in Residency at La Piscine, Musee d'art et Industrie, Roubaix in Northern France , funded by CCN.
Miriam has been invited by The British Council and Korean Cultural Foundation to present work at DiDance Festival, Seoul , Korea . She has made solo works for the Live Art Festival of Unusual Performance at Kaapelidas in Helsinki, Finland, the Open Art Live Art Festival in the Peoples Republic of China, (two times), and three separate solo performances at KOPAS Performance Festival in Seoul, South Korea. Larger scale choreographies include "Sleepwalker" for dance company High Spin performed at Corn Exchange, Brighton , Hackney Empire and Sadlers Wells, London .
She is on the editorial panel for Total Theatre Magazine, regularly contributing articles and reviews. She's a founder member of Movement 12 and a visiting lecturer teaching Performance and Choreography at various establishments in the South East including University of Brighton , Academy of Creative Training , and at The Hayward Gallery and South Bank Centre, London .
